Effect of mixtures of water spinach and fresh water hyacinth leaves on growth performance of pigs fed a basal diet of rice bran and cassava root meal

Twentyfourcrossbredcastratedmalepigswithinitialbodyweightfrom13.7to15.1kgwereallocatedto6dietscontainingwaterspinachatlevelsof0,5,10,15,20and25inDM,replacingfreshleavesofwaterhyacinthatlevelsof37,32,27,22,27and12inDM.Theothercomponentsofthediet(DMbasis)werefishmeal(4-5),soybeanmeal(4-5),ricebran(26-27)andcassavarootmeal(26-27).Theexperimentperiodwas120days.nbsp;Thereplacementof37freshleavesofwaterhyacinthby12waterhyacinthleavesand25freshwaterspinach(from37to12ofDM)withfreshwaterspinach(from0to25inDM)ledto:(i)a50increaseinDMintake;(ii)triplingoftherateofweightgain(from78to215g/day);and(iii)improvedDMfeedconversion(from9.2to4.4).nbsp;Itisconcludedthattherearenoapparentbenefitsfromincludingwaterhyacinthleavesindietsofgrowingpigs.nbsp;
