The importance of X-ray, CT and MRI imaging techniques in conservative orthopedics and manual medicine

The advancing diagnostic options for visualizing pathomorphologic alterations of the musculoskeletal system by imaging procedures, in particular the vertebral column, can lead to an overestimation of the results of the investigation techniques. The interpretation of X-ray findings by manual medicine has experienced various viewpoints. In conservative orthopedics and manual medicine indications of non-specific vertebral diseases are possible by exclusion of pathomorphologic alterations for painful vertebral diseases. This allows the increased use of clinical diagnostic strategies with the aim of obtaining indications for conservative orthopedic or manual therapeutic treatment forms. Knowledge on described, clinically irrelevant pathomorphologic alterations make it necessary to deal with this problematic area and underline the importance of clinical examinations to establish the clinical value of X-ray findings.
