Crises are to be avoided. "Do not bring us to the test. "They threaten and challenge us, disturbing the medium of often pleasing indeterminacy that turns Monday so swiftly into Friday. They menace our leisure. Yet knowledge is at the heart of both the problem and any possible solution. KM's perhaps too-often reiterated distinction between our tacit and our explicit lives goes deep here. The horror lies in its tacitness. Our explicit world of precautions, timetables, cities, systems, routines, discussions, treaties, technology, has been by-passed and undermined, even subverted for the purposes of terror. The explicit distinctions between friend and foe, right and wrong, our place and their place, have been dissipated, possibly irreversibly.
