Image recovery: issues and challenges

Image processing is one of the most prominent research areas for the last six decades. The real time based fields of active research are Image Analysis. Image Compression, Image Restoration, Image Recovery, Image Reconstruction. Image Segmentation, Color Image Analysis, Texture Analysis, Pattern Recognition, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Face Recognition. Image recovery is a technique for recovering an approximation of an original image from observed image and ether prior information. Recovery of the ancient and historic data into digital arena is a real challenge for researchers. The authors present a systematic survey of the issues and challenges being faced by the researchers in recovering the damaged/corrupted image. The various techniques/methods are presented and discussed. The results of various techniques are analyzed and compared with respective PSNR value for the benchmark images like LENA, BARBARA, MASQUERADE and PEPPERS.
