VD/VOD facility for refining superferritic stainless steels at ThyssenKrupp Terni works

The vacuum degassing (VD)/ vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) process has been developed with the objective in mind to carry out refining operations outside the melting furnace. The VD/VOD system offers the advantage of performing all operational metallurgical steps in one unit. In summer 2008 a new 1501 VD/ VOD plant was commissioned at ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni. The product mix of this unit consists of several forging grades. The prevailing grades are ferritic stainless steels, including some superferritic grades which are dealt with in this article.
