Development of an expert system for turning gear fault diagnosis in 210 MW steam turbine

A Turning Gear (TG) is the most important component of the turbine. It rotates the shaft system at sufficient speed, before start up and after shut down, in order to avoid irregular heating up or cooling down, and the associated thermal distortion of the turbine rotor and casing. An expert system has been developed to diagnose the faults of the TG, of 210 MW Steam Turbine, making use of a trouble shooting chart. The Knowledge Base of the Expert System consists of rules, which can be modified by the system, using its own analysis of inputs. This Expert System provides valuable information which would help reduce the risk of uneconomic and insecure operation of the TG.
