Packaging and transactions in the milk SAG: transaction attributes, dimensions and governance structure

This study aims to understand how the transactions of the processing segment with the distribution segment in the SAG of dairy products in Parana are influenced by packaging. In this aspect, the assumption is that the packaging, besides packing the product, has functions associated with the traded product and the transfer of important information to the distributor and the final consumer, impacting on transactions among agents, particularly for this sector. Its analysis is based on the theoretical framework of the Transaction Cost Theory (TCT) and Measurement Cost Theory (MCT). Under this basis, a qualitative study, of descriptive nature and sectional cut was carried out with representatives of the segments involved. From semi-structured interviews with processors and distributors, it was identified that the relationships between these agents take place by contractual form, but close to the spot market. In this aspect, when considering the property rights, multiple enforcers are identified as guarantors of the transactions. The promises made by the processors to the distributors and the dimensions of the product, easy to measure, take into account the packaging, which can be considered as part of the contract. In this case, the packaging carries information that has the function of transferring and securing property rights and informing about product attributes, reducing measurement costs.
