The Impact of ISO 14001 Certification on Cost Behavior of Petrochemical Companies Listed in the BMFBOVESPA Stock Exchange

The International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) standard for environmental management systems (ISO 14001), with subsequent certification of organizations under the standard, has been widely adopted by companies throughout the world. This important trend had prompted the study discussed in this article, which was conducted to identify the impact of ISO 14001 certification on the cost behavior of petrochemical companies. Results showing that the cost of goods sold increased more than net sales revenue suggest that companies that have achieved ISO 14001 certification have experienced diminished production efficiency.
