Two Japanese automakers have adopted a novel injection molding process which claims to hold significant potential in expanding the market for nylon air intake manifolds. A multi-cavity injection molding process jointly developed by Japanese mold maker Daikyo Corp, in Hiroshima, and Tokyo-based nylon supplier Ube Industries Ltd reportedly produces intake manifolds with three times the burst strength of vibration-welded manifolds. Car makers Toyota and Daihatsu have commercialized the technology, called die rotary injection molding (DRI) in their latest models, the NBC-1 (Yaris in Japan), and the Mira, respectively.
