The economic upheavals, which hit the world economy last year, did not remain without effect on the global sugar market. Falling crude oil prices, lower freight rates, the negative impact of the recession on sugar demand and the increasing risk aversion of speculative investors in the wake of drastic losses in the financial sector had a negative impact on global sugar prices. Also, excessive stocks, which increased by 12 mln tonnes in a time span of only two years (2006/07 and 2007/08) played a role.
