Frankfurt-based Almatis, the former specialty alumina division of Alcoa World Chemicals, has announced a worldwide price increase for all specialty alumina products. For all contracts effective 15 August 2004, the company will raise product prices by 50-120 dollars/tonne depending on product line. The increase is in addition to the 10-12 percent rise for non-contract customers in reactive and activated aluminas announced in June. Alex de Bonth, chief operations officer, said that an increase, facilitated by strong world demand, is needed to offset rising production costs. De Bonth commented: "Over the past years, our 11 global plants have worked hard on the reduction of manufacturing costs. However, worldwide demand growth has tightened supply of key materials such as alumina, and our energy and transportation costs have also escalated to an extent that additional cost pressures have exceeded our cost saving initiatives."
