It wasn't too surprising when - in the wake of the Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami off the coast of Japan - green activists from around the globe decried the use of nuclear energy. In much the same way as coal mining was vilified in the aftermath of the Queensland floods for its purported contribution to global warming, atomic power once again became a pariah for those who five under the impression that renewables can one day replace fossil fuels as the main source for base load electricity.
