Theaimofthisstudywastoestimatetheheritabilityandgenetictrendsforbirthweight(BW),weaningweightadjustedto240days(WW)andweightat16monthsofage(W16)inRomosinuanocreolecattle.Informationfromthe1960to2011databaseTuripanáResearchCenterwasused,employingunitraitmodelsthatincludedthefixedeffectsofcontemporarygroup(year-season-sex-)andageofthedam,randomdirectgeneticeffects,dammaternalgenetic(onlyforBWandWW),permanentenvironmentalmaternal(onlyforBWandWW),andresidual.VariancecomponentsandgeneticparameterswereestimatedbyREML,usingtheprogramAIREML.ThedirectheritabilityforBWwas0.19±0.04,0.13±0.04forWWand0.21±0.05forW16.MaternalheritabilitiesforBWandWWwere0.003±0.02and0.08±0.03,respectively.ThecorrelationsbetweendirectandmaternalgeneticeffectsforBWandWWwerenegative(-0.49±0.68and-0.13±0.27).Genetictrendsfordirectgeneticeffectsfortraitsstudiedwereallpositive(P0.01),whichsuggestlittlegeneticprogressinthepopulation.
