Fuji Machine Mfg. Co., Ltd., Japan's top producer of surface mount equipment for the electronics industry and a second-tier lathe builder, has replaced its president and CEO. Nobuyuki Soga, 57, succeeds Masayoshi Ohara, 67, who becomes chairman. Soga places priority on cost reduction: The number of lathe models will be halved to five by March, he explains. He also will halve lathe-parts inventories, tied to plans to standardize components. Soga joined Fuji upon graduating from the state-run Nagoya Institute of Technology in 1975.
