In August, PSMJ conducted a survey of 284 CEO members of its Design Professionals Leadership Roundtable. Of this group of design firm CEOs, 39 percent predicted that project opportunities and economic conditions will have improved by Dec. 31, 2009; 48 percent believed project opportunities and economic conditions would be about the same as they are right now; and only 11 percent think the overall situation will be worse by the end of year. These results represent a dramatic positive shift in CEO sentiment from three months ago. We at PSMJ believe that these positive predictions are likely based on a sudden rapid increase in the number of proposal opportunities seen over the last three to four months by most design firms across the U.S. This month, I will offer some ideas to ponder today as you approach your year-end business and strategic planning process for 2010-regardless of how you think economic conditions may be different in five months.
