In April, the copper industry got some good news from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The agency approved the registration of antimicrobial copper alloys with public-health claims. This made copper, as well as brass and bronze, the first solid-surface material to receive this type of EPA registration. The registration was based on independent laboratory testing using EPA-prescribed protocols. The testing demonstrated copper can kill specific disease-causing bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, an antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The implications for public spaces, such as hospitals and schools, are great.
