Shanghai's rate of growth slowed in 2022 compared with 2021 - a reflection of the general market slowdown after the latter year's catch-up following the pandemic. Its volumes of 47.28M TEU represent a tiny growth of 0.5. This is a contrast to the growth spurt of 8.1 it experienced in 2021 compared with 2020. The port has also been affected by Shanghai's stringent lockdown policy, especially during the second half of last year. Volumes at the Port of Shanghai decreased 15 in September 2022 since a peak in mid-July 2020, FourKites says. Singapore remains in second place, with 37.29M TEU, a dip of 0.5 year-on-year. Despite this, overall, the port has enjoyed solid annual growth over the last five years. PSA Singapore and JTC jointly announced PSA Jurong Island Terminal had achieved a record-breaking container throughput of more than 130,000 TEU in the year ending 31 December 2022, the highest volume since the terminal began operations in 2012. Ningbo-Zhoushan's volumes fell by 6.8 compared with 2021, down to 33.36M TEU. This an about-turn after the 8.2 jump it experienced in 2021. Nevertheless, the port is on an upwards trajectory, having jumped from fourth to third place in 2017, overtaking Shenzhen. Shenzhen's volumes rose 4.3 in 2022 compared with 2021, versus 8.3 up in 2021 compared with 2020. Last year, it was affected by local lockdowns and quarantine measures in response to coronavirus outbreaks, which created inevitable logistics bottlenecks. Shenzhen also had a seven-day lockdown in March last year.
