SALES ROSE SIGNIFICANTLY for Australia's Whitehaven Coal in July-September, thanks to the ramp-up of the Maules Creek thermal and metallurgical coal mine in New South Wales, and a stock build-up. The company lifted total managed sales 47.2 year on year, to 4.48 mt from 3.05 mt. Thermal sales made up 86 of the total, but this ratio is expected to dip as Maules Creek increases output. The company suffered sizeable reductions in received met coal prices in the quarter, and claims further output cuts - particularly among second-tier producers - will be necessary to spur any recovery in prices.
