摘要

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) was founded in 1964 by a small group of physicians involved in caring for patients with cancer, who wanted to develop a scientific basis for their investigations. The first scientific meeting was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in April 1965, in association with the American Association for Cancer Research. The meeting lasted two hours and had three presentations! From this modest first initiative taken by a group of determined oncologists, ASCO has developed into one of the world's leading professional societies, setting the standard for patient care worldwide, and leading the fight for more effective cancer treatments, increased funding for clinical and translational research, and ultimately, cures for the many different cancers that strike millions of people around the world every year.
