Data released on the second quarter showed the general economy growing strongly, but activity was still biased towards export industries. Slightly slower, but still vigorous, growth is expected from now on - the Ifo index of business sentiment fell in both June and July. The manufacturing sector as a whole is more subdued, which is easing pressure on supplies of coil and plate.As a result, cautious traders are likely to mark prices down, but there is still little to spare in the market. Mills were fully sold for September before the holiday break, and stock levels are low. Dealers will not be able to operate for long without re-ordering, whatever price expectations they have. They are likely to take up new rolled product as soon as it becomes available, but if the mid-year trend continues may find it difficult to pass on price rises to their own customers.
