Chinese exports jump

However, we believe that there are opportunities for an improvement in the tin price, particularly if Chinese exports slow over coming months. China is the world's largest producer of both mined and refined tin. China's mined tin-in-concentrate output rose 10.5 percent year-on-year in 1999 to 88,000 tonnes out of a total world market of 220,800 tonnes. Refined production was slightly higher at 92,300 tonnes compared to global production of 258,700 tonnes. Exports of refined metal reached 55,000 tonnes in 1999 - a rise of 20.5 percent against 1998 levels. Moreover, exports of tin and tin alloy more than doubled in the Jan/Feb period combined, when compared to 1999 (see chart).
