The European ferro-silicon spot market has been increasing through February as supply worries have prompted an extended bout of short covering and persisted in pushing up all ferro-alloys markets across the area. The US ferro-silicon market has edged up in February, extending a period of relative strength established around the start of the month as imports have dropped and as steel production has been fairly firm. The Chinese ferro-silicon market is expected to be muted in the short term in line with slow demand, with any attempted run at stronger prices seen as hopeless. Still, some producers believe such an attempt may be tried in the coming weeks due to more expensive production costs, although traders say demand looks too slow to support any such move.
