Large foam structure filters produced in ceramic AI_2O_3/Carbon or ZrO_2 give the foundry man a method for filtering castings higher in weight then 1000 kg, along with the ability to reach the quality standards required. Ceramic foam filters like STELEX PrO and STELEX ZR demonstrate that they are highly efficient in removing inclusions from molten metal and minimising turbulent metal flow. As demonstrated in the paper a number of different methods are available to incorporate filters in sand as well as in hollow ware gating systems. Generally direct pour systems are the most efficient related to improvement of yield. However, they can lead to higher metal velocities which must be taken into account at the design stage.
