In recent years, there has been a swift increase of research activity in ruthenium(II)-based coordination complexes as effective sensitizers in making cost-effective, third-generation photovoltaics, namely dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). This activity is largely due to their lower-lying metal-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition that extends into the red and near-infrared region of the solar spectrum.
