One machine, one set-up needs the right tools

Setting up workpieces once and performing all operations, however complex the component, is an on-going trend. Multi-task machines are becoming widely available to combine turning and rotating tool applications. The main advantages these machines provide are considerably shorter throughput times, improved quality, consistency and shorter total machining times. However; as with most machine shop developments, there are pitfalls which have to be addressed to obtain satisfactory utilisation and production results. Multi-task machines are now finding their way into a range of industries to machine parts that require turning operations and operations conventionally seen as machining centre operations. Growing complexity of components and the push to machine workpieces in one set-up have driven the development towards five-axis turning centres and mill-turn machines- machines capable of multi-tasking.
