I guess a polite way of saying it would be that it was one of those summers where it was very hard to predict what was going to happen. Cool and in many cases wet was a common theme through out most of Manitoba, and the rest of the country for that matter. High colony losses in both the winter and spring had a tremendous impact on the number of honey producing colonies Manitoba was going to have during the summer. Early estimates suggest that that we had approximately 71,000 honey production colonies in 2009 with and additional 5,300 nuclear colonies that did not produce honey this year but would be expected to produce next year if they survive the winter.
