We are often asked, "What are the benefits of being a member of the ASGS?" Scientific glassblowing has changed significantly during the years of the Society's existence. We have seen many changes and advances in technology that directly affect the scientific glassblower. At one time, a key part of new technology was the vacuum tube. Entire industries were created to support the demand for this new technology and the products that used them. This evolution can be seen in other areas that directly affect the glassblower today. Large and complex glassware was previously the norm for most laboratories. But today we have sophisticated instruments that use smaller samples to extract data and the glassware contained in the heart of these instruments is entirely different to manufacture. This process holds true for other areas as well; look no further than the laser of today. Initially, this was the new technology requiring a great deal of skill from the glassblower. This in turn has led to the creation of large industries producing materials related to the laser, such as fiber optics, LED's, optical cells, and more.
