Austrian Machinery, Steel and Plant Construction Industries

Austria's machinery, steel and plant construction industry is the countries largest domestic manufacturing sector. In 2002 the 638 enterprises in this sector and their 70,500 workers produced EUR 11.4 billion worth of goods. In 2002 the sector topped its 4.7% growth of 2001 by growing at a nominal rate of 5.4%. Industry belonging to the FMS accounted for three quarters of the total output. With Austria's small domestic market, a large part of the machinery and plants produced in Austria every year is exported. In 2002 the machinery and steel construction industry exported 68 % of its total output.
