Newly installed biomass boilers and other upgrades have breathed into Tembec's Beam sawmill. Decreased greenhouse gas emissions and reduced production costs have turned into a perfect marriage for Tembec's softwood lumber mill in Beam, Que. Since lastApril, a new seven-megawatt Wellons FEI bio-mass system has completely eliminated the fuel oil formerly used by the mill. Now powered by bark residues, the $6-million project is supported by government programs designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with grants covering half the total cost. "This is a great environmental project that will allow us to eliminate 8,200 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year. It's like taking 2,412 cars off the road. But the project also reduces our production costs, by bringing an 80% decrease in drying costs," says Marc Pare, general manager of technical services at Tembec.
