Establishing a plant-wide communications network among field devices, controllers and PCs can be brought about by several network protocols, but some food plants have found relatively simple Ethernet networks based on Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and related Web-enabling protocols to be the least expensive manner of achieving fast, although not necessarily real-time, communications with high bandwidth.
