Multiple challenges remain for intestinal transplant recipients, and these present unique clinical and experimental opportunities to both advance the field and broaden our understanding of intestinal transplant biology. Introduction.
This special AJ7~supplement reports on the proceedings of the XII International Small Bowel Transplant Symposium, held in Washington, D.C., in 2011. This event facilitated the presentation of current science in the field, recent clinical advances, problems the scientific community encounters, and ongoing clinical challenges to the success of intestinal transplants. As immediate past-president of the Intestinal Transplant Association (ITA) and program chair, I was in a unique position to assimilate this information and influence its broader dissemination. While past symposia resulted in short non-peer-reviewed proceedings, this supplement represents the, first forum through which AJTand the association worked together to provide you with some of the best work presented.
