I am writing to say how much I enjoyed the article on St Helens Canal (CB Feb). It's about time this waterway was afforded the historical significance it deserves as a pioneer of the industrial revolution...Bridgewater has had its own way for far too long! The motto on the St Helens coat of arms used to read 'Ex Terra Lucem' meaning 'out of the earth comes light', alluding to the lifeblood of industry - coal. And how else was that to be transported from the town but via the waterway. The decline of the coal industry in St Helens has largely been mirrored by the decline of the town itself. It would be fitting for the town to have an upturn in fortunes that the canal's regeneration would bring. The upper reaches, where your shopping trolley photograph was taken, is still known colloquially as 'The Hotties'.
