Freight. There! I've said it. And no doubt, already, most of you who have started to read this article will be preparing to throw it down again. It has that effect on people doesn't it, the freight debate? It makes your eyelids droop. It makes you start to think of bed. But actually if you're looking for a laugh to brighten up a cold spring day you could do worse than take stock of some of the things being said on the subject by the water transport lobby recently. Only the other week I read in The Guardian that Britain could cut up to 12 per cent of its road freight carbon emissions if it would only switch to water transport. If that happened, road haulage could fall by up to 22 per cent.
