U.S. Doesn't Have to Be Alberta's Only Energy Customer, Alberta's Government Says; Policy Looks to Global Market with Focus on Carbon Capture and Sequestration as Potential 'Boon' to the Province

Alberta is charting "a course for sustainable prosperity." The Canadian province is the world's second largest exporter of natural gas, the fourth largest gas producer, and holds 40% of Canada's conventional oil supplies. Alberta may cultivate new markets for its energy resources, concluded the Government of Alberta in a recent energy plan, Launching Alberta's Energy Future: Provincial Energy Strategy. In addition to focusing on "clean energy production and wise energy use," the government wants the province to focus on sustaining its economic prosperity by aggressively marketing the energy it produces globally to achieve a more diverse and resilient customer base, instead of relying heavily on the U.S. to purchase its oil and gas.
