Health and Safety now recommend a helmet conforming to British Standard EN 12492. For the purposes of this article I tried to download a copy of EN 12492 from British Standards Institute but it cost more than 100! Yes that's correct you need to pay tosee it. I suppose they need to pay the bill for testing things somehow... It is funny how Health and Safety use words such as 'recommend' and 'not compulsory' when you would think they would be more dictatorial. The HSE are strongly recommending a helmet that works within these guidelines. From what I can deduce this is as good as saying 'you really should be wearing one or providing your employees with one.' Because if there was an accident that resulted in a head injury and the injury was more serious because of a helmet that was not up to the guidelines, then it follows that you could be liable. Please bear in mind I am not in any way an expert on health and safety and these are personal deductions.
