Island Working

IN 1991, AT JUST16, NIGEL STARTED OUT ON A YOUTH TRAINING SCHEME (YTS), spending 2 days at college and 3 days at work. He had a placement in his first year with Tree Care loW Ltd. In his second year, this changed to four day's work and one day at college. He gained City & Guild level1 and NVQ level 2 in horticulture and level 2 in arboriculture. The qualifications covered planting, machinery, plant science and pests and diseases. In1993 he gained his chainsaw tickets. In1995 Nigel decided to go out on his own as a tree surgeon. With just his Maestro van and a trailer, he started carrying out tree work, alongside more general work, cutting grass and fencing; he also started to sell a few logs which he was cutting by hand.
