IF you asked anyone in the salmon industry what disease-causing organism they are most concerned about, it would probably be sea lice. The presence of these parasites has been a constant irritant for salmon farmers, because of direct damage caused byinfestations, the opportunity for infection by other organisms through sea lice lesions and the accusation that salmon farms act as potential reservoirs of sea lice infection for wild fish. This has made sea lice one of the most studied organisms in theaquaculture world, the focus of many aquaculture management strategies and a major money-spinner for pharmaceutical suppliers to the aquaculture industry.
