A year or so ago, I was sitting next to an accountant at a dinner party; let us call him 'Max'. On hearing that I was a GP trainee he turned to me and said, 'Really? Don't you just check blood pressures all day? Aren'tthere nurses forthat now?'.......Hmmm. Such derogatory comments and attitudes, sometimes stated in jest, will be familiar to many CPs and CP trainees. We may not always be bursting with passion for our chosen career, but I'm certain that most of us feel that what we're doing is worthwhile, and interesting. Therefore, I thought I would take the opportunity, in my first column, to discuss some of the reasons why becoming a CP is a good thing so that, when put on the spot, we can defend our job eloquently.
