Construction's historical focus on safety means that there's excellent data on accidents, while data on ill health - in particular respiratory ill health - is comparatively poor. The lack of immediacy of many occupational health problems, due to the long latency of some diseases and conditions, makes identifying and addressing causes problematic. And when individuals do present with symptoms, GPs often lack the specialist knowledge to determine whether there is a work-related cause, meaning that firms miss the feedback loop of information about what is making workers unwell.
