Until now, Karen Tack may not have been a high profile name in cake-decorating circles. To the editors of Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Good Housekeeping, Family Circle, Real Simple, Parents, and Martha Stewart Living, however, her skills as a food stylist are indispensable. "I need to bake," she stated during a Gourmet magazine interview in December of 2007. With a range from classic to whimsical, she is particularly adept at seeing the potential in manufactured candies and sugars-then transforming them into works of art. Her recent book, Hello Cupcake, a collaborative effort with photographer Alan Richardson, is a coming out of sorts for Tack and establishes her as one of the field's most innovative practitioners.
