Wood shingle roofs are found in many areas, of North America, as well as parts of Europe. The wood may be cedar, cypress, pine or redwood, and may or may not be fire-retardant or pressure-created. Even if treated with fire-retardant material, these roofs may deteriorate over time, with pressure treatment extending the effectiveness of the fire-retardancy. Due to the fire hazards diese roofs present, some municipalities have banned wood shingle roofs while others have gone so far as to require the complete removal of the roofs.
