Genetic variability and association of component characters for seed yield in clusterbean Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.)

One hundred genotypes of cluster bean Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.) j were evaluated to estimate the variability, heritability, genetic advance, correlation among traits, during kharif 2006. Maximum range of variation was reported for branches/plant, biological yield, pods/plant, and seed yield, clusters/plant and plant height. PGV and GCV values were highest for branches/plant, biological yield/plant, plant height, days to flowering, clusters/plant, pods/plant, harvest index, pods/cluster andseed yield/plant and were moderate for days to maturity, reproductive period. High heritability coupled with high genetic gain in percentage was observed for branches/plant, biological yield/plant, plant height, harvest index, clusters/plant, pods /plant and seed yield /plant. High heritability and moderate gain for days to maturity, reproductive period and 100 seed weight. Moderate heritability and low gain was shown for pods length and seeds /pod. Significant associations of seed yield/plot with pods/plant, clusters/ plant, biological yield/plant, primary branches/ plant and pods/cluster and no significant positive but desirable association with days to flowering, maturity and plant height. Path analysis studies revealed that pods/plant, clusters/plant, test weight, biological yield/plant, pods/cluster, seeds/pod and harvest index had positive desirable direct as well as indirect effects on seed yield per plant. The results of present study suggested that selection based on the pods/plant, clusters/plant, test weight, biological yield/plant, pods/cluster, seeds/pod and harvest index characters might bring simultaneous improvement in seed yield of cluster bean.
