On 24 May, 1869 at Green River Station in Wyoming Territory, 10 men under the leadership of Major John Wesley Powell launched four small boats and set off on an expedition down the Green and Grand (now Colorado) Rivers and into unknown territory that was rarely visited even by the Indians. Ninety eight days and 900 miles later on 30 August, two of the boats and the six remaining expedition members reached St.Thomas near the confluence of the Colorado and Virgin Rivers. Along the way one man had left during a resupply stop and three others, who had attempted to walk out just two days before the expedition reached its intended destination, were believed to have been killed by Indians.
