U.S. agricultural grade ammonium nitrate producers may be down to two, but they both plan to stay in the ag AN business. The producers, El Dorado Chemical Co., a unit of LSB Industries Inc., and Terra Industries Inc., were responding to an erroneous memorandum issued by the University of Kentucky agronomy department last week The memo, which was issued Aug. 8 to extension agents, stated: "Only two companies presently manufacture solid AN and both have announced that the liability of the product is too great to continue production due to the terrorist potential of the product as a dangerously explosive 'home made' bomb." The memo also said AN would not be imported into the U.S. Gulf due to liability concerns.
