Ornamental grasses are not anewcrop, but consumers are beginning to warm up to the versatile plants, giving growers a good reason to add grasses to their production schedules. Some growers may have been burned before on ornamental grasses when consumers didn't embrace the plants. But features like heat tolerance, winter interest and pest resistance have attracted consumers to these adaptable and interesting plants. "When I came to the United States in 1960, I saw that the land of the prairie had no [ornamental] grasses in the landscape," said Kurt Bluemel, president of Kurt Bluemel Inc. in Baldwin, Md. Bluemel glows ornamental grass liners and field clumps at his Maryland and Florida operations. "It took a long time for the American public and the professional grower to recognize the virtues and utility of grasses. When I first started growing and selling grasses in the states, people would say, 'A half pint of Round-Up will cure you.'"
