Part feature recognition system is one of the major approaches to solve the problems of integrating computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided process planning (CAPP). Specifically, the aim of part feature recognition system is to fill the gap between CAD database and CAPP system by automatically recognizing the features of a part from the data stored in a CAD system, and based on the recognized features, to drive CAPP system, which produce process plans to make the product. Part feature recognition system is presently designed in such an extent that it assumes a vital role in modem manufacturing system. Recognition of features, identification of features, and generation of product in term of its features have always been helpful to review the product after the design has been completed. Not only the optimization of process or selection of blank can be facilitated, but also the machining requirement and machine selection can be applied. In this paper, an attempt has been made to describe a model to represent any rotational part in terms of its features. Feature recognition algorithm has also developed for the foundation of the system. Simple relevant application software has been developed and is used to identify the features and shape of the raw material.
