According to a team of researchers, glaciers extended further south in England during the last Ice Age than scientists had previously realized, with Dartmoor having an ice cap some 100 metres thick (FTMagazine, 24 June 2012). The idea has been born from a study of Dartmoor's distinctive features. Detailed observations on the ground and aerial photography suggest the presence of glacial features-which include drumlins (elongated rounded mounds) and hummocky land-forms-indicative of the moraines of ancient glaciers. The distribution of Dartmoor's characteristic granite tors (Fig. 1) is also compelling, the researchers say.
