Geology in the regions

Today, when geologists are being urged to point out how our science can contribute to the targets set by government for local authorities under the variously defined term 'sustainability', there is heartening evidence that clubs, societies, and regional RIGS groups are doing good work towards that end. Often this comes in the form of Nature Trails (geological, of course!), the setting up of new Nature Reserves (again. geologically focused) or through the commissioning of outdoor sculpture in which natural stone is as much an expression of art as the work of the sculptor. There is no limit to the diverse approaches which succeed in saying boldly: 'This is geology and how it contributes to the local distinctiveness you enjoy.' In issues to come, an effort will be made to describe as many as possible of these initiatives, events and publications which have come to our notice. In part, this will be to applaud such efforts but, equally, will have the intention that good ideas are here to be borrowed and copied in other settings, other places. 'Geology in the regions' will be a heading for this section of the magazine, sustained by the promptings we receive from our readership.
