USE OF CALCIUM SULFIDE TO SEPARATE NICKEL FROM SULFUR-CONTAINING PULPS

One of the urgent problems facing metallurgical enterprises which process sulfide ores and concentrates by some pyrometallurgical methods is the problem of air pollution by sulfurous anhydride 1. USSR and foreign experience shows that the most profitable forms of commercial products, when salvaging sulfurous anhydride, are sulfuric acid, sulfate fertilizers, concentrated sulfurous anhydride, and elementary sulfur. It is also evident that in every specific case, the appropriate approach has to be targeted to a specific enterprise, and its technical characteristics. Moreover, from the aspect of profitability one would-have to incorporate a method of purifying low-concentrated gases. Thus, for the Noril'sk Mining-Metallurgical Combine a rather simple method was worked up to salvage sulfurous anhydride with water 2; the pilot installation tested a limestone process.
