摘要

Acute clinical deterioration of a patient with chronic liver disease remains a decisive time point, both in terms of medical management and prognosis. The emergence of ascites, jaundice, variceal hemorrhage, hepatic encephalopathy, and/or acute bacterial infections defines acute decompensation and initiates a new chapter in the natural history of a patient with cirrhosis irrespective of its etiology.
